While this area has rightly earned much admiration over the years, as we considered the future of the garden we saw an opportunity to create a noteworthy new landscape that would allow visitors to better experience and understand Piet’s signature planting. RHS Wisley’s Curator, Matthew Pottage, says: “When the Glasshouse Borders were first conceived in 2000, the RHS briefed Piet Oudolf to create two parallel borders in his New Perennial style to echo Wisley’s famed Main Borders. Retaining the much-loved views to the Glasshouse, meandering hillside paths will guide visitors through plant ‘communities’ that naturally support each other. The area currently occupied by the borders will be sympathetically redeveloped to create an experiential garden in the New Perennial style for which Oudolf is known. RHS Garden Wisley’s iconic Glasshouse Borders are set to be transformed into an immersive perennial paradise to a brand new design by internationally acclaimed landscape designer Piet Oudolf, who created the original borders over 20 years ago. He was awarded the highest cultural honor in The Netherlands, the Prince Bernhard Culture prize, in 2013, was named “Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau” by the Dutch King Willem-Alexander in October 2018, and he received the first ever Royal Horticulture Society Horticulture Hero Award during the Hampton Court Flower Show in July of 2018. Over the course of his career which spans over four decades, he has constructed dozens of private and corporate gardens, and collaborated on public spaces throughout the world, including Lurie Garden, the High Line in New York City, and temporary installations for the Venice Biennale and the Serpentine Gallery pavilion. Piet Oudolf is a renowned Dutch garden and landscape designer at the forefront of the New Perennial movement. Piet Oudolf designed the perennial plant design of Lurie Garden.
